On the Way to Hill Country

See what's waiting for you on your next island getaway. Savour the unique experiences this island treasure has to offer.

Despite being a relatively small island, Sri Lanka is endowed with a diverse collection of landscapes, climates and natural features. Sri Lanka’s infamous beaches have been enticing visitors for many years. However, the rest of the island harbours many more idyllic vistas.

The central highlands are carpeted with emerald tea plantations interspersed with occasional waterfalls. Cool climates, misty views, and quaint estate bungalows are a throwback to bygone eras.

The cultural triangle in the centre of the island holds a certain magic, with ruins from several ancient kingdoms, majestic tanks, hidden rock caves, and ancient sacred temples, revealing the fascinating and almost unbelievable ancient architecture, art, and engineering.

Lipton’s Seat

Located at a height of 1970 m above sea level, Lipton's Seat is a beautiful tourist attraction that offers awe-inspiring views of the surrounding verdant hills and tea plantations. The viewpoint is named after Sir Thomas Lipton, the founder of Lipton Tea. This precise spot is the place where Sir Thomas Lipton used to sit and contemplate his plantations. A statue of Sir Lipton greets visitors to Lipton's Seat.

From the summit, you will have a bird's eye view of the Uva, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Eastern provinces. This place is also perfect to witness the best of sunrise and sunset. You can also visit the nearby Dambatenne Tea Factory to understand the process of tea production.

Adisham Monastery - Haputale

This beautiful Benedictine monastery once belonged to tea planter Sir Thomas Lester Villiers. To recreate his English lifestyle, he developed some English country-cottage gardens, which are still enchanting visitors today. Inside, visitors are allowed to see the living room and library, which is filled from floor to ceiling with dusty tomes. If you like the monastery so much you want to stay, well, you can, as there's a small guesthouse. The monastery is about 3 km west of Haputale.

Today, Adisham is one of only 18 monasteries in the world belonging to the Sylvestrine Congregation, a suborder of the Benedictine fraternity founded in the 13th century.

There’s a small shop selling produce from the monastery’s lovely gardens and orchards. Buy some wild guava jelly or soursop cordial to pep up your next meal.
